Ancient Baths Experiences AIRE Ancient Baths Chicago

chicago bath house

Please take a moment to look at the photos of the food I have posted. While researching self care spas for myself and my husband, I came across a handful of bathhouses in the Chicagoland area that looked like something straight out of Game of Thrones. While bathhouses typically conjure up thoughts of sexy, kinky stuff, this list does not include “those” type of places. The following are all legit options for rest and relaxation.

When this happens, the water instantly evaporates, creating steam inside the oven and heating the brick enclosure, thereby raising the air temperature in the room. This method provides a much dryer heat than common steam rooms, but not as dry as traditional Finnish saunas. The bathers sit or lay on three-level tiered cedar benches, which allow for dramatically different temperatures at the various heights. Cold water is provided by taps located under the benches. When overwhelmed by the heat, a bather may dump a bucket of frigid water over his head while still in the hot room, or may step outside to use the cold pool.

The 9 Principles of Design and How to Use Them

pattern principle of design

An example of a natural pattern could be in the spirals of a sunflower head. Natural formations come in different scales, the more you focus on the details of a leaf, or plant the more you seen repetition in colours, shapes and lines. These fractals can be seen in succulents, snowflakes, leaf veins, rivers and tree branches. Artists have been inspired by patterns in nature for thousands of years, and continue to explore them in their work. When you repeat elements, the intervals between those repetitions can create a sense of rhythm in the viewer and a sense of movement. Musicians create rhythm in the spacing between notes, effectively making these “silent” gaps play off the notes.

Canva for Beginners: Create Professional Designs

pattern principle of design

Architects tend to include a unifying motif on the inside and outside of buildings to enhance the aesthetic appeal. Ancient designers could be ingenious in their use of patterns of such elements as lines and spirals. Patterns are made through repetition and by organizing a design in an orderly manner. This occurs through the arrangement of shapes, lines, and forms in a way that allows the art elements to repeat. As noted above, the use of repetition, pattern and rhythm are one of the key elements in enhancing and improving the experience for users.

Pattern in Art: Types and Examples

Now that you know the basic principles of design, it’s time to put them into practice. Last, but definitely not least principle, visual unity refers to the harmony between all parts of your design. We’ve all seen a design that has a lot of elements, but none of which is compatible with the other. Contrast is used to create an obvious difference between the objects of your design and highlight them as a result. On your composition, you can show contrast with contrasting colors, light and dark hues, small and big shapes, thin and thick fonts, and more.

Patterns in Line

The user’s eye will instantly recognize a regular rhythm, scanning it for any irregularities in the process. Therefore, there is a risk that when you’re using a regular rhythm in a design that it can become monotonous (like the dripping of a tap). As you might expect, designers base most patterns on colors, textures and shapes, rather than words. We can recognize shapes far more quickly than words, which we have to read, no matter how quickly.

Balance

You can use it to show relationships between content blocks, too. Repetition is simply repeating a single element many times in a design. For example, you could draw a line horizontally and then draw several others next to it. These patterns can be a simple mix of vertical and horizontal lines, such as displayed in the examples above. A natural pattern can be seen in the petals of a flower, the complex branches within the structure of a tree, and the spiral of a shell. The world of patterns is never-ending, and artists are constantly exploring innovative ways to produce patterns.

Patterns in Shape and Form

A literal way of showing movement is by using an image that includes motion, like a dancer or hair in the wind. Some artists use illusions like optical art, in which the repetition and contrast make our brains want to organize the information. Mucha was an artist from the Art Nouveau movement, that worked primarily with the lithography printing medium. The patterns in his lithograph ‘Zodiac’ feature a repeating motif of stars and circles.

Natural Patterns in Art

You can see seamless patterns predominantly in interior design when using tiles. The use of patterns can enhance the viewer's experience and the look of a final design. Lack of balance would make your design feel heavy on one side and empty on the opposite. If you're wondering about principles of design balance examples, you’ll know your design lacks balance when it feels as if it’s falling off to one side. In my previous article, The Basic Elements of Design, I talked about the elements that create everything we perceive. With a solid understanding of those elements, you’ll be able to learn more about the principles of design.

However, the lines filling the shapes show insects morphing into birds, then fish transforming across the piece. This is an example of a progressive irregular pattern, where the design motif changes. The design elements can appear reflected in any axis of the surface. The symmetry could also be radial, whereby elements are repeated around a centrepoint. Escher used this type of radial symmetry in his piece ‘Relativity Lattice’. The regular symmetry is seen in the radial reflection of the staircase, although not in the other elements.

But when it comes to design principles, numbers aren’t the important thing. With the right tools and principles, your design will be ready to melt hearts. If there is no relationship between your two or more elements, your design will give a messy and unprofessional feel.

Like many kinds of art, graphic design has its basic principles and elements. The principles of design are the rules a designer follows to have a composition that’s just right. They help you create artwork that’s not only beautiful and eye-catching but also correct in ways professionals can see and viewers feel. Patterns are inherently repetitive, it is the repetition of elements that creates a pattern. Artists may use repeating elements to create a visually pleasing design or to communicate a theme in their artwork.

Foreman Day was a surface pattern designer who started his career as a stained glass painter. He then began working with different media, designing patterns for wallpapers and textiles. He published a number of books on pattern, one of his most famous books was entitled ‘Anatomy of Pattern’, which is considered to be a culturally important piece of literature. If you’re interested in deep diving into the world of pattern design, it contains advice about how to approach pattern design that is remains relevant today.

Rohinton Mistry, Camilla Gibb, Lynn Crosbie and similarly notable names in Canadian literature have been published in the HHR. The review also hosts lecture and reading events that feature established and emerging figures in Canadian literature and publishing. In addition to its regular exhibitions, the gallery houses an art collection that is valued at over CDN $10 million. Hart House is an example of Gothic Revival architecture as it is asymmetrical with pointed arches and windows, extensive ornamentation, steeply pitched roofs and a tall tower.

Opening Reception: Summer 2024 Exhibitions

With approximately 717 works, the collection spans various forms, reflecting the sheer breadth of Canadian art. Beyond its cultural significance, the collection serves as an educational resource to visitors. Of course, people use this iconic spot to study and that’s why students can get a 20% discount on Candlelight concerts. There are 50 discounted tickets in zone C so grab it while you can using the code HARTHOUSE20. The Conservatory String Quartet gave performances on the Hart House Viols, a chest of six viols purchased ca 1930 by the Massey Foundation and the Arts and Letters Club.

The viols became the sole property of Hart House in 1935 (see Instrument collections). Their use was restricted to experienced 'string musicians for rendering music appropriate to them'. They were used by the Toronto Renaissance Quintet, led by Wolfgang Grunsky, and by the Hart House Consort, led by Peggie Sampson. The viols, still owned by Hart House in 1990, were not in playing condition.

Tournament Details

The Permanent Collection is on view throughout Hart House and the historic core of the Collection is in constant demand by major exhibitions throughout the world. Hart House provides resource spaces for students to study and work between labs/classes. Rooms are WiFi-enabled, allowing students to do online research for assignments or attend online classes. There will be no access to parking on Tower Road or Hart House Circle. For more information about parking on U of T campus, please visit the Parking Services website. Masks are no longer required to be worn in all indoor spaces of Hart House, including the Hart House Theatre, Hart House Fitness Centre, and the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery at Hart House.

The tournament will be hosted at the historic, neo-gothic building, Hart House, at the University of Toronto. Hart House is regarded as one of the world’s most beautiful student centers and is a visual icon of the University of Toronto. The grand interior of Hart House is designed with high arched ceilings that vary from room to room. On an annual basis the Orchestra runs two concerto competitions, one internal (open to HHO membership) and one external (open to the community).

We ask everyone to respect others' decisions, comfort levels & health needs. Since 1976, the HHO has provided an opportunity for members of the University of Toronto community with musical interest and training, to fellowship and perform challenging symphonic works. New York, which has been eliminated from postseason play, closes out the regular season at home against Ottawa on Tuesday and Minnesota on Saturday. After World War II, Hart House Theatre, under the direction of Robert Gill, became an extracurricular student theatre and for twenty years turned out a new generation of stage professionals.

Beginning in 2010, students in the Faculty of Music Consort have used them in rehearsals which are often open to the public. The collection of six viols is on permanent display in a glass case in the Gallery Grill restaurant on the second floor of Hart House. Each one was made by a different luthier, with the earliest one from c. Distinguished architect Henry Sproatt designed Hart House in the Collegiate Gothic style using the finest of materials.

Born in Toronto and raised in Mississauga, Hopkins, a fourth-year student at the Ontario College of Art and Design University (OCADU) has mixed roots, hailing from the Batchewana First Nations near Sault Ste. Marie, and the Métis community of St. Paul in Manitoba on his mother’s side. He is also English on his father’s side, having ancestors who immigrated to Canada in the 1940s. By the mid-1960s the theatre joined the world of academia with the creation of the Graduate Centre for Study of Drama. A new generation of students combined dramatic literature with practical theatre experience and learned from and contributed to the vibrant Toronto theatre scene of the 1970s.

A name which just so happens to be identical to that of a 111-year-old student centre at the University of Toronto. Since 1976, the Hart House Orchestra has provided an opportunity for musical fellowship among members of the University of Toronto community with training and interest in performing symphonic works. The Hart House Art Collection is incredibly impressive, including works like A.Y. Jackson’s Georgian Bay, November, embracing mid-century movements pivotal to Canadian art.

“The bricks and mortar are but the bones; the community must provide the spirit,” said Massey. There are two accessible entrances and exits at Hart House, one located at Tower Road and one on Hart House Circle, the southeast double doors at the Founder's Prayer. In addition to the two accessible entrances/exits, the south doors east of the Arbor Room entrance on Hart House Circle are also available for use. As an undergraduate, Vincent Massey read history and English at University College in the University of Toronto, and then completed graduate studies in history at Balliol College, Oxford. Upon his return to Canada, he sought to bring a unifying, communitarian spirit to the highly independent colleges of the University of Toronto, inspired by the social and recreational life that he observed at Oxford's colleges. Massey, who in 1908 had become a trustee of his family estate, offered to establish a structure devoted to extracurricular activities at the university, an idea that was embraced by the university's governors.

While there was an early reluctance to include jazz in the music programs at Hart House, by the late 1950s regular jazz concerts had been initiated, and among the noted artists who subsequently appeared were Moe Koffman and Oscar Peterson. Sproatt’s showpiece, The Great Hall, occupies the east wing of the House. A gilded inscription of Milton’s Areopagitica, written in 1644 in defense of freedom of speech and thought, surrounds the 140-foot hall. The coats of arms of the Royal Family and degree-granting universities of the British Empire from 1919 sit below an enormous stained glass window on the south wall.

It meant that every piece of writing had to be approved by authorities before it could be printed, completely stifling freedom of speech. Eclectic and wide-ranging, many works are installed throughout offices and public spaces across campus to enhance the working and teaching environment of the University of Toronto. We wish to acknowledge this land on which the University of Toronto operates. For thousands of years it has been the traditional land of the Huron-Wendat, the Seneca, and the Mississaugas of the Credit. Today, this meeting place is still the home to many Indigenous people from across Turtle Island and we are grateful to have the opportunity to work on this land.

On the south side of the building there is a line of miniature human head sculptures made out of stone near the top of the building. There are also stone lions and monkeys that are on the outside of the main doors one at each side. The arch braces on the flat roofs of the east hall ways have carved decorations on them.

It is also a late collegiate Gothic building because of its late erection date, 1919. The building consists of four wings around a quadrangle with a four-peaked tower extended from the south west corner. Although Hart House appears to be of masonry construction, it is actually structural steel and precast concrete with grey sandstone cladding. New York’s Brooke Hobson scored her first career goal — with assists from Micah Zandee-Hart and Jade Downie-Landry on a power play with 48 seconds remaining — to cap the scoring. Natalie Spooner followed with her league-leading 16th goal of the season — six more than the next closest player.

The Most Durable and Easiest to Clean Flooring Types

Gilded mirrorsFor those living in rental apartments, gilded mirrors leaned against or hung on a wall offer a variation on intricate wall molding but without the construction work. Ultimately, the choice between a bungalow and a two-story home comes down to personal preference and the specific needs of the homeowner, with design flexibility allowing for adjustments during the planning process. From layout designs to exterior appearances, each has its own charm and practical advantages worth considering. The statistic that might surprise you is that ranch houses have been experiencing a resurgence in popularity in recent years. Luxury vinyl truly offers a hassle-free flooring option that keeps our homes looking stylish and well-kept with minimal effort. When it comes to ease of cleaning, we find that Luxury Vinyl Flooring and Ceramic Tile stand out.

Classic Interior Design

While both offer unique living experiences, bungalows are characterized by their cozy layouts and affordability, whereas traditional houses encompass a broader range of styles and sizes. The design of ranch houses allows for easy indoor-outdoor living, with a focus on blending the interior space with the surrounding landscape. In our quest for the most durable and easiest to clean flooring types, we've explored solid hardwood, engineered wood, laminate, luxury vinyl tile (LVT), and porcelain or ceramic tile. With a focus on affordability and relative durability, engineered wood flooring presents a compelling alternative to solid hardwood for homeowners seeking a balance between cost and longevity in their flooring choice. In comparing the environmental impact of old and modern houses, the use of eco-friendly materials and technologies in modern homes significantly reduces carbon footprint and energy consumption.

Plan: #208-1026

Think of a villa that stands out not just by its exterior but also through its distinctive façade. This is where the architect plays a crucial role, blending the classical style with a finish that whispers sophistication. It’s not about sticking to the past; it’s about refining the concept to fit the style house of today, making it relevant and appealing for residential living.

Toile de Jouy or toile patterns are still being used in interior design, but they’re not as limited by the traditional design elements as they once were. With modern interpretations and interior trends popping up, the iconic print is just as alive as ever. Whether you’re a maximalist or lover of traditional design, you’ve certainly encountered the iconic printed fabric, which has been around for centuries. Originally showing scenes of the pastoral French countryside, the toile pattern has evolved over the years to depict interpretations of modern times and is still used in both interiors and fashion today.

Steps to Designing Your Classic House: Your Roadmap to Timeless Elegance

Following current trends while blending them with timeless principles is key to achieving a timeless look. When asked to describe California's decorating style, the word cool comes to mind. It's true the Golden State has perfected the art of creating effortless and easygoing interiors, but there's so much more to it. The land of new beginnings bursts with creativity from esteemed craftsmen constantly reinventing the wheel and challenging how we view design.

Pillars and columns continue to adorn the building but are repainted with simple details or contemporary materials, such as steel or concrete, to convey a modern feel. We’ve walked through the A to Z of creating a classic home that’s timeless and fine-tuned for modern living. Balance and symmetry aren’t just for suburban mansions; they can also work in New York apartments! The home’s strategic placement on the site capitalizes on the dramatic topography, with the double-height living area delicately balanced atop a retained wall, a remnant from a previous structure.

The front door is typically a substantial, paneled design with decorative hardware and a transom window. The kitchen, bathed in natural light, showcases a stunning blend of modern and natural materials. Clean-lined cabinetry and a sleek white countertop provide a refined backdrop, while the warm wood tones of the ceiling and floating shelves add a touch of organic elegance. Stepping inside, the home’s interior design seamlessly weaves together the architectural elements, creating a cohesive and inviting atmosphere. An oak “liner” wraps the walls, ceilings, and stairs, defining the various spaces and guiding the eye through the home’s open floor plan.

Can traditional architecture work for modern life?

Designed by the innovative team at AUX Architecture, this contemporary masterpiece seamlessly integrates the existing landscape, creating a harmonious interplay between indoor and outdoor living. Designer Stephanie Hatten updated the Gatehouse Kitchen, turning it into an airy English-country-inspired space. An eye-catching natural stone by Walker Zanger was selected for the counters and backsplash, and the space was outfitted with the latest Monogram appliances.

From there, the popularity of toile de Jouy exploded in the interior space, and it has been a classic staple in more traditional interior styles, and more modernly in fashion, ever since. In contrast, bungalows focus on efficient use of space with compact closets and small verandas, offering cozy design elements. Ranch houses often boast high ceilings and separate bedrooms, providing comfort and privacy, while bungalows may offer customizations like converted attic spaces for personalized touches. When comparing old buildings to modern ones, we see a stark contrast in architectural styles, amenities, and safety features. Old buildings often lack modern technology and energy efficiency, while modern buildings prioritize sleek designs, eco-friendly materials, and advanced systems. Each type has its own appeal, with old houses showcasing character and architectural details, and modern houses prioritizing efficiency and functionality.

These homes are as diverse as the state’s many cities, with each region offering different options to suit any homeowner’s needs. From in-depth articles about your favorite styles and trends to additional plans that you may be interested in. Traditional architecture can incorporate stylish features like innovative technology and energy-efficient systems while maintaining its old-fashioned charm.

These can include symmetry, balance, simplicity, and traditional building materials. Our classic house plans are timeless and elegant and do not adhere to a specific era or architectural fashion. In conclusion, the distinct architectural characteristics, layout designs, interior features, and exterior appearances of ranch houses and bungalows offer unique advantages and cater to different preferences. On the other hand, ranch houses opt for simplicity and practicality in their exterior design, aiming for a modern appearance. While ranch houses exude a more contemporary and horizontal look, bungalows radiate a traditional feel, incorporating unique architectural details that enhance their exterior design. In conclusion, the enduring appeal of classic design style lies in its timeless elements and ability to blend tradition with modernity.

Different bungalow types like Craftsman or Tudor have unique design elements, setting them apart from other home styles. Additionally, ranch houses usually emphasize large windows and spacious patios, whereas bungalows are known for their charming front porches or verandas. Understanding these architectural distinctions can help homeowners make informed decisions when choosing between ranch houses and bungalows.

Kitchens are often the heart of the home, and they’re the perfect place to blend classic designs with modern amenities. With a few modern touches that complemented the original hardwood floors and intricate moldings, we kept that everlasting charm intact. Situated atop a steeply sloping site in Los Angeles, California, the Windsor Residence showcases the innovative design of AUX Architecture. This captivating house seamlessly integrates an existing retaining wall, overcoming the challenges of extreme topography, poor soil conditions, and a limited budget.

Even the school crest and motto is carved onto the façade of Hart House. These carvings are a beautiful addition aesthetically to the building. The Art Museum at the University of Toronto is one of the largest gallery spaces for visual art exhibitions and programming in Toronto. Charles Vincent Massey (BA 1910 UC) was chairing two student clubs and working for three U of T newspapers in 1910 when he saw an opportunity to forge links across faculty and college rivalries.

History

The Great Hall at Hart House is not only one of the oldest student centres in the world but its architecture is like something straight out of Harry Potter. This magical room is a feast for the eyes, featuring spectacular, soaring stained glass windows, an ornate wooden ceiling, gorgeous inscriptions, and now breathtaking Candlelight concerts. Designed by the Toronto architects Henry Sproatt and Ernest Rolph, and located on the University of Toronto's St George campus, this gift to the university from the Massey Foundation opened 11 Nov 1919.

This committee oversees concerts and events of various types of music, including rock, reggae, and folk. Throughout the school year the committee organizes six to ten concerts. The committee's aim is to bring the entire music community together from all campuses. These events are considered a "must see" for all first year students. There’s plenty to do at Hart House including events that appeal to those who love art, culture, and expanding intellectual horizons. You can visit exhibitions on music, from those focussing on the war in Ukraine to another that takes a deep dive into Toronto’s hip-hop history.

Jocelyne Larocque notched an assist as Toronto took a 4-0 lead after two periods. The Hart House at University of Toronto is a unique treasure situated in downtown Toronto, Hart House is full of elegant rooms and beautiful architectural details. Both the bridal suite and the groom suite (Bickersteth Room) were filled with oak-paneled bookshelves, stone fireplace, and leaded glass windows. You could feel the emotion in the room when the bride put on her ring designed by the groom, and when the groom opened the letter and gift from the bride. In the autumn of 1979 the music committee and CBC Toronto marked the 60th anniversary of Hart House with a series of four concerts featuring the Hidy-Ozolins-Tsutsumi Trio, Lois Marshall and Greta Kraus, Adrienne Shannon, and the Elmer Iseler Singers with the Toronto Brass. It was also the location in 1981 of the COMUS Music Theatre presentation of Graham George's opera A King for Corsica. Hart House's facilities include the Great Hall located in the East Wing which functions as an event venue, conference centre, and concert hall and houses a Steinway grand piano. The Music Room in the West Wing also boasts a grand piano, and is used for smaller concerts, lectures and events. The Theatre with its proscenium arch is located underground, and there is a large fitness/athletics complex. Besides other rooms for meetings and student use, Hart House houses an Art Gallery, and owns a farm located in Caledon used for retreats and recreation.

List of wardens

The ceilings in the corridors and many rooms such as the Upper Gallery of the Great Hall are vaults with ridge ribs, but of particular emphasis is the treatment of the library ceiling that uses decorative Lierne ribs, which can also be seen in the entrance vaults. The general shape of the frontispieces and what appear to be Tudor-like archways mirror the shape of the chimney arches, while the decorative cinquefoil shapes used for the windows can also be seen in the woodwork of doors and trusses. The main entrance on the south side, the entrance on the west side, and the entire east wall is treated with a Perpendicular style parapet of battlements. The Gothic nature of the structure is emphasized through the structural systems, layout, and ornamentation, while the weight of stone is de-emphasized through its decoration, and its contrast with the thin stained-glass windows.

Today, Hart House is a centre for experiential learning outside of class, but when it opened in 1919, it was a male-only space, a status-quo even endorsed by then Senator John F. Kennedy when he was invited to speak in 1957 (as reported in the Star at the time). Protests by faculty and students, along with shifting societal norms, forced change, and the ban on women fully ended only in 1972. Step into the Great Hall and you will immediately feel like you’re in a Harry Potter movie and at a Candlelight concert it has all of the enchantment of a Hogwarts ball. It has the same Collegiate Gothic style that feels very European, exactly like Christ Church College in the UK (actual set).

The organization, renamed the Hart House Debating Club, has ever since been the primary speech and debating society at the University of Toronto open to all students from all colleges and campuses. Close to the Romanesque-building style, Gothic, or Gothic-revival style uses stone masonry to build. The use of rocky dark sandstone and limestone materials contrasted greatly with the smooth brick lining inside, the pointed-arch shape dominating the windows and doors and hallways. The porch is another Gothic-revival element that architect Henry Sproatt added, a protected space in front of the main entrances for people to hide in case of bad weather. The addition of decorated wooden arch-braces and ceilings act like an acoustical amplifier for the Hart House Orchestra. Since 2008, the venue has hosted two of the largest annual Toronto chess events, the Hart House Holidays and Hart House Reading Week Open Chess Tournaments, regularly attracting over 200 players.

The grand interior of the House features high arched ceilings that vary from room to room. Uniquely designed fireplaces and well-tread wood floors add warmth to the House’s common rooms. This U of T landmark might not be the only Canadian establishment learning of a new naming conflict, as a Burnaby B.C. The name of a beloved Toronto building is buzzing on social media this week, all because of a famous, pint-sized American comedian and actor. Hopkins says he’s sick of apocalyptic and dystopian outlooks on life that often place Indigenous peoples in a negative light, so he began asking himself how he can make people feel good when looking at his art. Hopkins isn’t only moving Hart House into the 21st century with the messaging of his art, but with the use of technology as well, in the form of augmented reality. “If you point your phone at the mural, an eagle comes out of the star world and flies around the room.” Using Meta’s augmented reality (AR) technology, one can scan a QR code next to the mural, which will then open the Instagram app’s camera. The idea for the mural came to Hopkins while he attended that powwow at Fort York with his grandmother and sisters.

But before that official opening, during the First World War, the building was used as a training and rehabilitation facility for soldiers. Hart House celebrates its 100th birthday today, but the building has served as a focal point at the University of Toronto – and, indeed, the city – for more than a century. In 1995 a decision was made to restore and conserve these instruments, and on 20 May 1999 an unveiling ceremony took place at the Gallery Grill (antechamber to the Gallery Lounge).

Arizona House Votes to Repeal 1864 Abortion Ban The New York Times

She also recounts the night in 2022 when an intruder broke into the Pelosi home and assaulted her husband, Paul Pelosi, with a hammer. Democrats and abortion-rights groups celebrated the vote as an important move toward undoing what they called a draconian intrusion into women’s rights. The 1864 law outlaws abortions from the moment of conception except to save the mother’s life, and it makes no exceptions for cases of rape or incest. Arizona took a major step on Wednesday toward scrapping an 1864 law banning abortion, when three Republican lawmakers in the state House of Representatives broke ranks with their party and voted with Democrats to repeal the ban.

Modern Movies All Kids Should Watch Before They're 12

life as a house

Sam undoubtedly suffers from substance use disorder, secondary to his underlying depression. Overall, Life As A House is a feel-good movie that is worth the watch. Once George is diagnosed with cancer and discovers he may not live past the summer, he decides he will finally accomplish the task of tearing down his father’s house and rebuilding it.

Reviews for AI Apps and Tools

Sam smokes marijuana which George discovers and flushes, causing Sam to become irate. Sam even calls the City Inspector on his father as payback, hoping to cease building in order to let him go to Lake Tahoe with his friends so he can drink and party. When Sam’s attempt to sabotage his father’s house fails, he pitches a fit and confesses to using drugs since he was twelve because no one has ever cared what he does. When a man is diagnosed with terminal cancer, he takes custody of his misanthropic teenage son, for whom quality time means getting high, engaging in small-time prostitution, and avoiding his father.

I cannot proceed further without informing you that very early in the movie (spoiler warning), George discovers he has about four months to live. For a time we assume he has Ali MacGraw's disease (the sicker you get the better you look), but a specific diagnosis is revealed toward the end. “Life as a House” has much heart and not enough brain, and to the degree that you can put your centers of higher intelligence on hold, it works as a tragicomic weeper. Because it is slick and classy and good to look at, and the actors are well within their range of competence, you can enjoy the movie on a made-for-TV level, but you wish it had been smarter and tougher. It is a little deadening to realize, at about the 25-minute mark, that the problems of every single major character will be resolved by the end.

When George refuses to give Sam money unless he works for it, Sam toys with becoming a prostitute, but is nearly caught and flees from his first encounter. During the confrontation between father and son, George confesses to Sam his experiences with his own father – how he always made him feel small. George tells Sam that nothing was ever good enough for his father, and if he could not make George feel smaller with words then, he implied, he was beaten. George voices his concerns to Sam because he reminds him of himself.

Situated between oak trees, the project included the renovation of an existing barn into a large living space and concert venue area. Predock Frane’s Venice House is sited in Venice Beach next to the area’s original network of canals. Designed as a reductive sculptural mass, the project embraces the soft California light while carefully modifying the existing 1940’s bungalow. The film opened in twenty-nine theaters in the US and grossed $294,056 on its opening weekend. It eventually earned $15,667,270 in the US and $8,236,521 in foreign markets for a total worldwide box office of $23,903,791.

George awakens in a hospital, and learns that he has terminal cancer. After his diagnosis, George decides to take control of the last few months of his life. He tackles a life-long goal of tearing down his father’s old beach house and building a new house. After a meeting with his ex-wife, Robin, George brings Sam to his beachside shack. House lawmakers are pushing ahead with plans to boost junior enlisted pay and other military family financial support as part of an ambitious quality of life overhaul for troops, but Senate lawmakers still aren’t sold on the idea.

In my experience, people on roofs tend to hold on while digesting astonishing discoveries. Another involves the comeuppance of a nasty neighbor (Sam Robards). The nature of his comeuppance is dictated by the Law of Character Economy, which dictates, I believe, that the purpose of concealing his identity in an earlier scene is to reveal it in a later one. While most patients who receive a terminal illness diagnosis develop depressive symptoms, George’s symptoms disappear. George even states he is happy for the first time in ten years as he is building his home. Perhaps receiving the diagnosis gave George clarity by allowing him to complete his life’s mission of, one assumes, building his dream house, although George is actually rebuilding his family.

George Monroe, a jaded architectural model fabricator, is living the bachelor's life in the old family shack on the coast of California. Over the years, George has been avoiding getting up to modern CAD technology standards and eventually is fired from the architecture firm. When the principal owner refuses to let George keep a few of his models, he destroys all but one of the models with a roll of design plans.

Senators unsure about House plan to boost troop pay, housing stipends

Walker Workshop designed the Oak Pass Main House as an “upside down” program with public spaces above living quarters. Expertly integrated into the surrounding landscape, the elegant design was carefully built around a 75-foot swimming pool and large oak trees. With George still unable to leave the hospital and continue his work, Sam decides to hang Christmas lights from the house.

Animal sanctuary icon Lee Asher has started a separate, personal social-media page on Instagram. The Car Park House was designed as a floating structure on a steep slope that places the residence’s carport on the roof. Building off this inversion, the project also takes advantage of unobstructed views of the San Gabriel Mountains to the northeast of Los Angeles. Hollywood has fallen on dark days, dumbing down many of its films to the point where the actors seem measurably brighter than their dialogue and decisions. The current "My First Mister" directed by Chrstine Lahti, has surprisingly similar situations, more effectively handled. “Life as a House” is aimed at the audience that admired a movie like “Terms of Endearment” (1983) but exists, alas, on the level of its pale sequel, “The Evening Star” (1996).

That Sam and Alyssa will become friends, and a little more. And that two unassigned characters of opposite genders are required by the laws of screenwriting to get together, even if one is a teenage pimp and the other a yuppie housewife. George's shack sits in a cul-de-sac high on a cliff overlooking the Pacific, in Orange County, Calif. Owners of ocean frontage in that area will be interested to learn that with 26 weeks of severance pay as a model-maker, George can afford to tear down his house and build another one. The White House has already proposed a 4.5% pay raise for all troops in 2025 as part of their federal budget request for fiscal 2025. That idea appears to have bipartisan support in both chambers.

He visits with George in the hospital and brings his bed to the window. Robin stays by George’s side until the time of his death. Sam decides to give the house to the now-grown woman who was injured and lost her mother in the drunk driving accident caused by George’s father.

He sees the same actions and responses in Sam that he had in himself all those years. George calls Sam “barely alive”, and states that he would not be happy anywhere. He begins to assist his father with tearing down the old house and building the new one.

Robin (Kristin Scott Thomas), his ex-wife, now trapped in a loveless marriage with the absent-minded Peter (Jamey Sheridan). Sam (Hayden Christensen), George and Robin's angst-ridden, pierced, drug-using and self-loathing son. Coleen (Mary Steenburgen), the next-door neighbor, and her daughter Alyssa (Jena Malone).

What is remarkable is how Kline and Thomas, in particular, are able to deepen their characters by sheer skill and depth of technique, so that we like them and care what happens to them. (Whether it is George and Robin we like, or Kline and Thomas, is beside the point--the characters and actors amount to the same thing.) Some episodes in the movie seem especially contrived. One involves a character who discovers something astonishing and falls off the roof.

George tells Sam, who feels betrayed and accuses George of being selfish and takes refuge at Alyssa's house. George collapses and is found by Robin the following morning. Complications arise when neighbor David Dokos tries to halt construction because the building's height exceeds the allowable limit by six inches.

George describes his father as a terrible drunk who one night drove while intoxicated and killed his mother and another woman, in addition to crippling a little girl in the back seat of the other car. George expresses guilt for not killing his father which may have prevented the accident. George confesses to Sam that he has been taking those pain medications for cancer, and he does not have much longer to live.

But there is a lot that is right with the movie, too, including subtle, magnetic performances and moments of real power and feeling. If the movie is not as dazzling as the finished house, at least it is not as decrepit as the shack. Since Taylor Swift released The Tortured Poets Department, fans have turned one line in her song “Who’s Afraid of Little Old Me? Social media has been full of people quoting the line “You wouldn’t last an hour in the asylum where they raised me,” and now, Monica Lewinsky has joined in on the trend.

20 Stunning Aquascaping Ideas for Your Ideal Aquarium Setup

According to competitive Dutch Aquascaper Bart Laurens, Dutch style aquascapes are not known for using hardscape, but that does not mean hardscape is prohibited. Instead of using a large stone or piece of driftwood as the focal point, Dutch Aquascapes often use a large aquatic plant, or cluster of plants, as a centerpiece. Instead, Dutch Style Aquascapes create beauty by juxtaposing colors, leaf textures, and differences in height of various aquatic plants. Dutch Style Aquascaping primarily relies on aquatic plants to create an aesthetically pleasing arrangement.

The 12 Aquarium Set-Up Ideas

You can see how the substrate in this tank is completely obscured by the growing plants, and the growth continues up the hardscape and even out the top of the tank! You can tell that the substrate is piled into peaks and valleys to create layers in the tank. With the heavy plant growth on the branches you almost can’t see the hardscape in this mature tank. Getting the sand and different plants shouldn’t be too expensive since a variety of plants found in the fish store will do. Alternatively, if you want something more authentic, you can buy live aquatic plants to adorn your cool aquarium. The interior is a galactic wonder, adorned with miniature planets, twinkling stars, and intricate space stations.

This solitary focal point can be adorned with different sizes of rocks, driftwood and an assortment of aquatic plants. Step into a world of magic and wonder with this enchanted forest-themed fish tank. Towering aquatic trees, moss-covered stones, and fairy-like lights set the scene for an environment straight out of a fantasy tale. Adding a touch of whimsy to your space, this carousel-inspired fish tank combines the magic of childhood memories with the serenity of aquatic life. The circular design features a rotating center platform adorned with miniature aquatic-themed carousel horses.

Lush plants, vibrant corals, and colorful fish dance in harmony, all illuminated by nightlights that add a dreamy, tranquil glow to the room. Melding the beauty of aerial plants with underwater wonders, this design is a fusion of a hanging garden and an aquarium. Plants are suspended above the water, with their roots delicately dangling into the tank. Below, fish swim amidst these submerged roots and other aquatic plants, creating a harmonious blend of terrestrial and aquatic beauty. Time takes on a new dimension with this hourglass-shaped fish tank.

To maintain such a densely planted tank you’ll need excellent lights, filters, and a carbon dioxide injection system. Takashi Amano, known as the Father of Modern Aquascape, brought this style to its current height of popularity. The Iwagumi aquascape utilizes odd-numbered rocks as the primary hardscape, with the largest “Father” rock dominating the tank. A few small-growing plants are chosen to balance and harmonize the effect. Many folks get into aquarium keeping because they want beautiful community tanks filled with fish and other aquatic species. When you get into aquascaping, your focus shifts from the animals to the plants and other visual elements in your tank.

Additionally, the addition of other aquatic plants around the base can give a feel of shrunken environment. Most aquascapes include live plants, but you can also create a stunning scene by arranging hardscape features like rocks and driftwood. Another tank that uses the backdrop to give the feeling of a blue sky, this one features a cluster of rocky hardscapes hidden under pockets of low-growing plants.

So, get ready to explore the art of aquascaping and turn your aquarium into a captivating underwater paradise. Dive into the world of aquascaping, where imagination meets underwater design. While untraditional rubbish is certainly a sign of the times and can work well for biotope aquariums where realism is key. Soda cans and coins can add a touch of human impact and raise awareness of ocean pollution and other sustainability-oriented issues. The only downside to using rocks is that many affect the chemistry of your aquarium water by leaching carbonates and other hardness-raising minerals.

Stunning Aquascaping Ideas for Your Ideal Aquarium Setup

The concept of gluing rocks and stones to plastic works great for fish tank décor. For example, this low-effort fish cave project is as simple as they come. Grab a plastic container, cut it in half, and make a hole in the middle with a heat gun.

This DIY cement castle is the hardest and most time-consuming DIY plan on the list. The key here is to follow the instructions closely and never rush it. Next, use a glue gun to create a paper castle (don’t forget to mark the doors and windows with a pencil). This includes plastic bags, but also toys that are poorly constructed. Items containing chemicals can be dangerous as well, either if ingested or in polluting the overall environment. Generally speaking, such items are safe for use in your aquarium.

Imposing pillars, archways, and sculptures lay in ruins, creating an underwater cityscape reminiscent of civilizations long past. As fish navigate these historic remnants, the growth of algae and corals on the ancient structures adds a touch of nature, beautifully merging the past with the present. Challenge your perception with this mind-bending fish tank design. Utilizing mirrors and strategic lighting, the interior of the tank creates a captivating kaleidoscopic effect.

The best tool for sticking stones to that container is a glue gun. For the best results, we recommend using stones of various shapes, colors, and sizes. For an average-size aquarium, ten lucky bamboo plants should be enough. All that’s left to do now is add a bunch of plants for that “exotic” look.

Aquarium lighting comes in several types but LED lights are by far the most efficient in terms of power consumption to output. While not as inexpensive as incandescent or fluorescent hoods they compare very favorably to the powerful but expensive actinic and halide setups used for corals. Ring bubblers are a recent alternative that even come with LED lights for an easily installed showpiece. Typically you’d want to be using subdued hood lights such as a black light setup so your LEDs aren’t overpowered. In larger aquariums pieces of broken pottery, dishes, or glass bottles work nicely as accent points. Large pieces of PVC piping from a hardware store can be used to replicate a chemical plant outflow.

In the evenings, expect "country-club casual" attire, with men wearing collared shirts and women in pantsuits. In 1998, Club Med 1 was sold to Windstar Cruises and renamed Wind Surf. The ship was based on Windstar Cruises' smaller 5,350-ton, 148-passenger Wind Star, Wind Spirit and Wind Song motor sailing yachts. All were also built by Société Nouvelle des Ateliers et Chantiers du Havre, France. In 2013, she was featured in the season 7, episode 3, of a Discovery TV series, called Mighty Ships. Nightly informational sessions regarding ports of call and activities are presented by the staff before dinner. Evening entertainment is informal and social, with a small dance combo playing in the main lounge and a duo in the Compass Rose.

Controlled directly from the bridge using hydraulics, they're capable of generating speeds of up to 12 knots, without any supporting engine power. The fact that the sails are computer operated doesn't detract from the romance of their presence. Don't miss the chance to sit out on deck and watch them in action -- particularly if you can snare the perfect Caribbean or Mediterranean sunset at the same time -- as the ship sails away from port. Wind Surf underwent a significant renovation of public spaces and suites, including an expanded lounge with new lights and sound for upcoming stage performances.

Atop the reading lights were lamps, and additional lighting included fluorescent fixtures above the windows, and recessed ceiling lights—in all, plenty of illumination. Bright white and gleaming like Wind Surf’s sails, we were fairly happy with our cabin, which benefited through the the ship’s December 2012 renovation. Our cabin was located on Deck 1, and our cabin floor was even with the outside water level—we felt very close to the sea. There are 31 Suites located on Deck 3 (except for once unit located on the Bridge Deck). All of the suites were created by combining two standard cabins, and each has two bathrooms.

Other entrée options included filet mignon and marinated sea bass (both of which looked better than what we had). Despite the food being our least interesting meal aboard Wind Surf, the setting was magical—we’d still rate this venue as a don’t-miss, but don’t forget to bring a jacket or wrap. At breakfast, the buffet selection included bagels with smoked salmon and fixings, Greek yogurt and honey, packaged cereals, a nice selection of sliced fruit plus stewed (compote) fruits such as pear and peaches. Hot buffet offerings included scrambled eggs, bacon (soft or crispy), oatmeal and cream of wheat, sausage (chicken or pork), fried potatoes, etc. At all of Wind Surf’s restaurants there are plenty of two-seat tables, which meant we were never forced to share with other guests.

Servers seemed hurried over breakfast; we didn't always find it easy to catch the attention of a crew member to place an order, and sometimes had to wait a long time for an order to arrive. On the flip side, we were greeted by name and breezily served by the extra-friendly crew just as soon as we were seated in AmphorA and the Yacht Club. Given the ship's high crew-to-passenger ratio (there's roughly one crew member to every two passengers), we anticipated a more seamless and efficient level of service overall.

Located on the Main Deck next to the Yacht Club, there were just two PCs available for guests to check email or websites. The basic rate for internet access—using the ship’s computers or our own laptop anywhere on the ship—was $50 for 75 megabytes of data, or $100 for 160 megabytes. There was a usage meter (in a second browser) that indicated how many megs had been consumed.

A crew show during each cruise is a delight, showcasing their homeland cultures. You may find occasional movies in the main lounge, which is outfitted with state-of-the-art video and sound equipment. Whether on the sailing ships or megayachts, it doesn’t take long to read the daily schedule of activities on a typical Windstar cruise. Diversions are for the most part social, laid-back, and impromptu.

Club Med 1 made her maiden voyage in 1990, and sailed for Club Med for eight years.

For Stella Bistro and—especially—Candles, reservations are strongly advised. On one night of the cruise all of these venues were closed and a deck-top Barbecue Buffet Dinner was organized. Founded in 1984 as Windstar Sail Cruises, Windstar Cruises today is one of the world's leading operators of small luxury cruise ships. Its award-winning fleet of yachts accommodating between 148 and 310 guests sails to some 150 ports in 50 nations across the globe.

Stairways are rather steep, but forward and aft elevators assure that moving about is relatively easy. Double the size of standard staterooms, suites were created from two standard cabins and have two bathrooms and a seating area with a sofa bed. New spa suites include plush spa robes, tea service, and credits for certified organic spa services and fitness classes in WindSpa.

Other spirits were not allowed in cabins; Windstar offered to stow them until the last day of the voyage. Located on Deck 2 aft, Wind Surf has just one, square swimming facility, and it's not much more than a plunge pool, but it is appealingly positioned, and adequately sized for a small ship. The relatively few loungers surrounding the pool were often at a premium.

Suites include an extra bath and TV along with sitting area and his-and-her bathrooms. Our bathroom was stocked with fine L’Occitane amenities—soap bars, shampoo, conditioner, shower gel and body lotion. A hair dryer was found in one of the desk drawers (where the outlet was located). There were two pair of slippers and a couple bathrobes in the closet. At embarkation, a bowl of fresh fruit was set on the desk—replenished at least once during our cruise—as well as a vase with a tulip.
